Martin is the genius responsible for the whole phenomenon: he’s the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire literary saga.
There are still two books left to go, meaning the Game of Thrones showrunners had to overtake him and plot their own way towards the end of the TV show.
It has long been known that Martin told David Benioff and DB Weiss what his basic end-points were, but in a new interview he’s said they only took him up on “some” of them.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, he was talking about the strangeness of watching the final few episodes while he was working on the next book, The Winds of Winter, given their differing content.
“The whole last three years have been strange since the show got ahead of the books,” he told the US publication.
“Yes, I told [Benioff and Weiss] a number of things years ago. And some of them they did do. But at the same time, it’s different.”
So were there things GRRM told the producers that they didn’t implement? Very possibly so.
Martin went on: “I have very fixed ideas in my head as I’m writing The Winds of Winter and beyond that in terms of where things are going. It’s like two alternate realities existing side by side.
“I have to double down and do my version of it which is what I’ve been doing.”
He has already confirmed that he will not be changing his plans based on the somewhat divided fan reaction to the Game of Thrones finale, or as a result of the fervent fan speculation online.
“Because you’ve been planning for a certain ending… if you suddenly change direction just because somebody figured it out, or because they don’t like it, then it screws up the whole structure,” he explained.
“So no, I don’t read the fan sites. I want to write the book I’ve always intended to write all along.
“And when it comes out they can like it or they can not like it.”
Martin has implied that The Winds of Winter will be out by summer 2020, although no publication date has been set.
After that, he will still have the seventh and final novel to go: A Dream of Spring, which will wrap up A Song of Ice and Fire.
Game of Thrones’ TV legacy, meanwhile, will live on with a new prequel series.
