NBA star Gordon Hayward has revealed that a connection through his personal trainer is the secret behind his relationship with Nick Kyrgios.
Kyrgios is a keen basketball player when he is off the tennis court and wears the Air Jordan brand before his matches.
The Boston Celtics are Kyrgios’ favourite team and his Twitter bio contains a reference to the franchise and the green three-leaf clover.
Kyrgios is into the third round of the US Open and faces Andrey Rublev on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Ahead of the match, Hayward caught up with the US Open channel and was asked about his relationship with Kyrgios and disclosed that the pair sometimes play video games together.
“When I was injured my personal trainer that I was working with, used to work for Tennis Australia,” Hayward said.
“So that was the connection that we had. And a couple of years ago I went to the Miami tournament and met him there.
“Got a chance to interact with him and found out he’s a massive basketball fan.
“And more than anything a massive Celtics fan.
“We’ve stayed in contact ever since. We’ve played Fortnight together a couple of times.
“He’s extremely talented. So I’m going to watch his match tonight.”
Meanwhile, during his commentary of Rafael Nadal’s match with Hyeon Chung, American tennis legend John McEnroe was asked to discuss Kyrgios and his eventful week at Flushing Meadows.
And McEnroe feels the 24-year-old is suffering from a fear of failure.
“His fear of failure is so great that he wouldn’t train hard enough to put himself in a position where he would be vulnerable,” he said.
“Hopefully that’s changing slowly but surely at 24.
“I’m still holding out hope.”
