A fan on Reddit has suggested that the Marvel blockbuster’s epic scene – which saw Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) falling to her death – was something Nebula knew would happen.
After all, she figured out what happened to Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War – so was she the one who sent Natasha and Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) to retrieve the Soul Stone when they time-travelled in Endgame?
Of course, possession of the Soul Stone requires the seeker to make a huge personal sacrifice: for Thanos it was Gamora, and here, Natasha and Clint fought over which one of them would give up their life so the other could get it.
In a theory that has been 91% Upvoted, Reddit user MrMortsnarg acknowledged the criticism that Clint and Natasha being sent was a “big coincidence” – considering the sacrifice wouldn’t have worked if two characters with a lesser bond were present.
So did Nebula know all along – and make sure they were the ones that went along?
The theorist wrote: “The Soul Stone requires someone to sacrifice the one they love most, in this case Clint reluctantly sacrificing Natasha.
“I wouldn’t call those two going there a coincidence.
“Nebula was the only remaining Avenger that knew how to get the Soul Stone.”
They added: “In the 5 year gap, we see that her and Rocket were in regular contact with Natasha; while Natasha was still trying to find Clint.
“My theory, which admittedly isn’t very groundbreaking, is that Nebula suggested that Clint and Natasha fetch the Soul Stone, since she witnessed how close they were.
“They are two of the perfect candidates to retrieve it.”
But some have questioned if Nebula did know the methodology of how the Soul Stone is retrieved.
One responded: “No one knew the cost before going but the viewer and once they learned it, Clint didn’t reluctantly sacrifice Natasha, she sacrificed herself for not just him and his family but for everyone she loves back on Earth, those who did and didn’t survive the Snap.
“I could see Nebula thinking you had to kill someone for the stone, but that’s about it.”
Another commented: “Nebula could not have known that the Soul Stone required a sacrifice. Even Thanos didn’t know that it required a sacrifice until he got there.
“He killed Gamora, and he himself never told Nebula (he died). She knows that Thanos took Gamora to where the Soul Stone was, then came back without her (and was mourning, implying her death). That’s it.”
But could Nebula have simply done the maths and suspected that the Soul Stone would come at such an almighty cost?
That’s open to debate – read the full discussion on Reddit here.
