The Transport Secretary told the coronavirus daily briefing that UK businesses including bars and restaurants want to open and start trading again. Mr Shapps stated that the Government was planning for an “outdoor summer” if conditions allowed it.

Mr Shapps said: “As conditions allow and not until July we will be looking to support creative ways for businesses to reopen while maintaining social distancing.

“We know restaurants and bars will want to start trading again and we will work with them so that we can enjoy an outdoor summer in a safe and responsible environment.”

Mr Shapps was also grilled regarding Dominic Cummings’ alleged trip to Durham during the daily coronavirus briefing.

The Transport Secretary faced numerous questions on Dominic Cummings after the Prime Minister’s senior advisor was allegedly being caught flouting the Government’s strict lockdown rules.

Mr Shapps said: “You have to get yourself locked down and you need to do that in the best and most practical way and that will be different for different people under whatever circumstances their particular family differences happen to dictate.

“That is all that has happened in this case.

“He was there, he stayed there.

“I can carry on answering but it is the same answer each time.”
