HOLLAND 1-1 ENGLAND

1: No rest for the wicked, we’re back underway in Guimaraes. I know this is tense – but I’ll take this over a pointless friendly any day of the week.

I’ve reset the clock. 30-minutes of added time to be played.

Twitter reaction

Shaun: You can’t get mad at VAR. VAR is a computer screen, the decisions are still made my the referees. There is also no reason why refs shouldn’t be given time after a game to explain their VAR decisions as well

David: VAR is ruining the game. It takes too long and the decisions are more controversial than in real-time. Should only be used when clear and obvious mistakes have been made, and it’s not being done that way

Mark: Genuine question about the VAR offside decision – if the camera isn’t fully in line with the offside line can it be 100% accurate when it’s that close?

All good comments and questions that I don’t possibly have the time to engage with. Sorry! I have embedded the video of Jesse Lingard’s offside goal below.

HOLLAND 1-1 ENGLAND

FT: Ladies and gentleman… we have extra time! Oh come on, it wouldn’t be England in a European final without complete agony!

96: It’s England throwing the punches here but perhaps it’s come too late. Why weren’t we playing with this much gusto at 1-0?!

Raheem Sterling looks to curl a sensational finish from outside the penalty area but it’s shaved the crossbar and gone over.

94: Harry Maguire… you lucky, lucky boy. The Leicester star looks to usher the ball out of play but Bergwijn wins it and crosses for Depay. The Lyon star can’t control his first-time hit and sends it into the stands.

92: Jesse Lingard picks the ball up in midfield, breaks through the line when accelerating pst De Jong before curling just wide of the post.

90: Just the SEVEN MINUTES of additional time, folks. Not like we all have trains to catch…

88: Say what you want about VAR – and I’m sure you are – but both of those decisions were ruled correctly. It’s totally ruined the fluency of the game now, but I suppose that’s something we’ll have to adjust to.

85: VAR Check! And we have another check. This time it is for a possible handball from Chilwell. The Dutch players are surrounding the referee… but it’s clearly struck the defender in the back.

83: England are ahead! Oh wait… or are we!? Jesse Lingard has just scored with a beautiful tidy finish underneath Cillessen – but there’s a VAR check.

Just seeing the replay now… ah it’s offside by a matter of inches. Devastating scenes in the office here – I just threw my drink over all of my colleagues.

81: “You have to say it’s a real problem for England in tournaments, how to keep the ball and control the game. In midfield tonight, they have just not been able to get a grip on the game at all,” says Gary Neville.

80: Chance! Holland have all the momentum as England struggle to put more than three passes together. Donny van de Beek arrives late in the penalty area but wildly volleys over from eight yards.

78: Jordan Henderson on for England. He replaces the much-maligned Fabian Delph for the final stages.

75: Now… what are Gareth Southgate’s England made of? Few niggly fouls and wayward passes since the equaliser with neither side taking control.

HOLLAND 1-1 ENGLAND | DE LIGT

73: England lose a semi-final lead… Not heard that for about 11 months.

Ajax superstar Matthijs de Ligt makes amends for conceding the penalty with a bullet header to level for Holland.

John Stones was the man tasked with man-marking the 19-year-old, who bullied his way through to Memphis Depay’s delivery.

Holland vs England LIVE: Nations League semi-final updates

72: “Holland are banging on the door,” says Gary Neville. I don’t know about banging – perhaps a forceful knock. Plenty of half-chances and blocked shots but Jordan Pickford remains relatively untested.

70: Booked! Harry Kane decides to leave one on Daley Blind. Hooks the Ajax defender with a late challenge and goes in the book.

69: Ryan Babel is replaced by Quincy Promes, Donny van de Beek on for Martin De Roon. Both attacking changes for Ronaldo Koeman’s side, who are struggling for creativity.

68: England looking really difficult to break down here. They’ve dropped off and got behind the ball and they are frustrating the Netherlands.

65: Ben Chilwell exacts a bit of retribution on Denzel Dumfries with a foul of his own. The Dutch have a free-kick over on the right touchline – which Memphis Depay promptly ruins with a high, long cross to absolutely nobody.

Holland vs England LIVE: Nations League semi-final updates

63: Hey! Young and emerging 26-year-old talent Jesse Lingard has entered the fray. He’s on for Jadon Sancho who, aside from the miss, has been very good indeed.

60: We’ve reached the hour-mark and this is getting tasty. Will England be made to pay for that Jadon Sancho miss?

57: And another Memphis Depay opportunity goes begging. Kyle Walker is robbed by the Lyon star who leathers it at Jordan Pickford from distance. The Everton stopper blocks before Memphis completely misses a bicycle kick.

54: Take a bow, Jadon Sancho. He plucks the ball out of the sky in his stride before travelling 30-yards forward. He eventually wins the corner off Virgil van Dijk.

CHANCE! Oh my days. Ben Chilwell recycles the set-piece and crosses perfectly for an unmarked Sancho – who nods straight at Cillessen from point-blank range.

51: Martin De Roon, formerly of Middlesbrough, fouls Ross Barkley and England have themselves a free-kick in a handy position. It’s worked to Harry Maguire, who leathers it across the penalty area. No player in white could provide the finishing touch.

HOLLAND 0-1 ENGLAND

48: Offside! Very annoying with linesman raising his flag minutes after Raheem Sterling flies through down the left. He checks inside and sees a flick saved by Cillessen, all in vain of course.

HOLLAND 0-1 ENGLAND

45: England are 45-minutes away from an actual final. Now where have I heard that before?

We have a change that sees captain Harry Kane replace Marcus Rashford, who picked up a knock during that challenge with Dumfries. No suggestion that he’ll miss Sunday’s final should we make it.

Twitter round-up

Kyle: The Dutch have played the better football but they haven’t created many clear cut chances. Pickford hasn’t had to make any great saves so far. Barkley has been the pick of the England players so far.

Gary: We should not be too hard on De Ligt. He is only 19. Wouldn’t we snap him up if he turned out to be English-qualified somehow?

Alex: Denzel Dumfries and Clement Turpin on the pitch together. What a time to to be alive.

That really would be a turn up for the books, Gary…

HOLLAND 0-1 ENGLAND

HT: And that’s the break! Southgate’s Three Lions may have been outplayed in the early stages – but Marcus Rashford’s ice-cool penalty is the difference between these two sides.

45: After a medical inspection, Chilwell is alright to continue as the fourth official holds up two minutes of added time.

44: Dumfries finally goes in the book for a reckless challenge on Chilwell. He actually lead with a palm to the Leicester full-back’s face. Nasty challenge with Chilwell still on the deck.

41: Close! Ross Barkley draws a free-kick around 35-yards from goal and England try a training-round routine.

Slab head uses his best feature to knock the ball down for Fabian Delph to lash straight at Cillessen.

38: Marcus Rashford was down injured for a few moments after that challenge but after a limp and a hobble – he’s moving just fine.

35: Nearly a second! Beautiful build-up play from the Three Lions with Jadon Sancho roasting Matthijs de Ligt. The Borussia Dortmund star ghosts past him before finding the run of Marcus Rashford – but Dumfries arrives from nowhere as he’s pulling the trigger.

33: Ever since seeing Marcus Rashford slam home that 96th-minute penalty against PSG in the Champions League – I’ve trusted him with spot-kicks. Who needs Harry Kane, eh?

32: Marcus Rashford has scored four goals in his last seven appearances for England – one more than he netted in his first 25 games for his country (three).

HOLLAND 0-1 ENGLAND | RASHFORD

30: GOAL! Nerves of steel from Manchester United star Marcus Rashford, who sends Cillessen the wrong way with a cracking penalty.

That’s perked up the England fans! The Three Lions lead in Guimaraes and are heading for Sunday’s final.

PENALTY TO ENGLAND

30: We’ve been outplayed since the first kick… but England have themselves a penalty! Everyone’s favourite transfer target Matthijs de Ligt has probably cost Ajax £20million when clumsily bringing down Marcus Rashford inside the penalty area.

29: Groans and ironic cheers from disappointed England fans as Kyle Walker runs the length of the field before playing in Ben Chilwell – who’s miles offside.

Holland vs England LIVE: Nations League semi-final updates

28: The Netherlands are dominating this match. They’re bossing England in midfield and creating openings every few minutes. Nothing that’s caused Pickford any real problems yet.

Quite surprising our trio of Ross Barkley, Declan Rice and Fabian Delph are being beaten really…

25: A problem made and solved in Leicester as Harry Maguire underhits a back pass to Ben Chilwell, who just about manages to prevent Bergwijn from sneaking in.

24: Interesting tactics from Gareth Southgate at set-pieces. Fabian Delph has quite clearly been given the task of man-marking Virgil van Dijk in both offensive and defensive situations.

Delph vs VVD? Only one winner surely…

21: Denzel Dumfries is a lucky boy. He’s cynically rugby tackled Ben Chilwell to the floor when beaten for pace but referee Clement Turpin only gives a warning.

Fabian Delph fouls Virgil van Dijk as the delivery goes in.

Holland vs England LIVE: Nations League semi-final updates

18: Unlike Jamie Redknapp – I’m not prepared to label Frenkie de Jong the best midfield player in the world. However, he’s started extremely well. Pulling the strings in midfield and dictating the pace of the game.

I suppose that’s the luxury afforded to you knowing Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt are standing behind you.

15: Memphis Depay has been linked with a few Premier League clubs this summer. They may want to think twice after seeing the forward bizarrely dribble backwards to the centre-circle before hoofing it into touch. Strange one that.

13: Declan Rice and Harry Maguire get themselves in a muddle on the halfway line and Wijnaldum is gifted a clear path forward. He reaches the penalty area before teeing up Babel, whose first touch is quite terrible. John Stones clears it into orbit.

10: Ominous signs for England as Ronald Koeman’s Holland take a grip. Harry Maguire and John Stones back off the advancing Bergwijn, who strikes straight at Jordan Pickford.

Holland vs England LIVE: Nations League semi-final updates

8: Not sure how the ticket allocation was divided between these two nations – but England are certainly outnumbering the Dutch. Could easily be a home match for the Three Lions.

Memphis Depay has his first involvement when twisting and turning just outside the penalty area before the shot is blocked by John Stones.

5: Mighty close to an opening for England! Jason Sancho leaves Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries for dead before his floated cross narrowly misses Raheem Sterling in the middle.

The subsequent corner is played deep to avoid Virgil van Dijk in the six-yard box but Harry Maguire skews the opening.

3:  “Don’t take me home, please don’t take me home,” sing the exuberant England fans. I suspect the population of Guimaraes are singing quite the opposite.

Jordan Pickford has a nervy moment when shanking a clearance straight into touch. Fortunately for him the Dutch couldn’t capitalise.

HOLLAND 0-0 ENGLAND

1: ARE YOU READY FOR THE SEMI-FINAL OF THE NATIONS LEAGUE?! Cool, we’re underway. Go on England!

What a gent…

19:43: Considering the terrible weather, the young mascots haven’t been equipped with any jackets. Fabian Delph decides to put that right and gives the youngster his training hoodie. Top lad.

Just hearing the national anthems and I think it’s safe to say WE’VE WON THAT! Much, much louder. Still lots of unnecessary booing for the Dutch anthem though. Fortunately it died down after the initial few seconds.

Five-minute warning

19:40: Nearly underway folks. The players have just emerged from the tunnel at the Estadio D. Afonso Henriques, led by captain Raheem Sterling.

Quite a good atmosphere considering it’s absolutely lashing it down – and has been all day long.

Twitter round-up

Barry: I reckon Louise Redknapp has a better football opinion than Jamie.

Tom: Jamie Redknapp says Frenkie de Jong is the best midfielder in the world. That’s quite a shout. Wonder how much he’s seen of him?

That’s just a small sample of the riot Jamie Redknapp has caused on Twitter.

Excuse me?

19:30: Jamie Redknapp is certainly in strange form this evening. He’s only been live on Sky Sports for ten minutes and already caused commotion.

He started by comparing Declan Rice with Tony Adams. He then continued to describe Frenkie de Jong as the best midfield player in the world.

Doubtless he’s seen him play three or four times in the Champions League before making that call. Wonder what Kevin De Bruyne and Co would say about that.

VVD determined to disappoint…

19:25: A task made a lot simpler given Harry Kane starts on the England bench tonight…

Virgil Van Dijk feels fresh, hungry and hangover-free after Liverpool’s Champions League win, with the defender determined to halt Harry Kane once again.

The defender said with a smile that he is “completely sober” and, just five days after winning the Champions League, is ready to help Holland tonight.

“Harry Kane is a fantastic striker,” Van Dijk said. “It’s not easy to come back from it but I think if they play, they’ll definitely want to show themselves and try and win the game. We’ll see if they will play.”

‘Raheem Sterling was not an obvious candidate’

19:20: England manager Gareth Southgate: “We were always of the mind that the Champions League final was going to be a hugely intense occasion physically and emotionally for those players.

“It’s never easy to leave these guys out but they are professionals and they understand the decison. We have got some great strength to come in to the game and equally we have great pace to hurt the Netherlands early on.

“The young ones have played throughout this competition. We want to develop them, we are building for next year as well as wanting to win this. Delph is a fantasic character, without Henderson’s leadership in midfield he gives us this balance.

“Raheem Sterling was not an obvious candidate to be captain a few years ago but he has grown in confidence and maturity. He is a hugely popular player with his team-mates.”

About last night…

19:15: Whoever wins tonight will have to do something about Mr Ronaldo in Sunday’s final.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning hat-trick beat Switzerland 3-1 to book the hosts a place in the Nations League final.

Switzerland have the honour of playing in the inaugural Nations League third-placed play-off. What a time to be alive…

Matthijs De Ligt…

19:10: Yet another precocious talent making a name for himself at Ajax – and another likely to leave for pastures new before a ball is kicked in the 2019/20 season.

The 19-year-old defender already possesses enough authority to captain Ajax and he has made great strides since bursting onto the scene in 2016.

He became the youngest player to feature in a major European cup final as he played in the 2017 Europa League final defeat to Manchester United.

He also happens to have been linked to every club under the sun including Liverpool, Barcelona and Manchester United.

Love this!

19:05: Ajax continue to justify their ‘everyone’s second team’ status. They’ve rinsed UEFA’s handy list of pronunciations of the Dutch outfit.

“Good luck against @England, Mat-ice Dull-icht, Duh-yong, Farnder-bake and to rhyme with ‘binned’, not ‘bind’,” they tweeted.

Embarrassing and yobish…

19:00: It’s not been great over in Guimaraes folks.

The FA has called the fan disturbances in Porto an “embarrassment” to the England team.

The Three Lions’ preparations for the Nations League semi-final with Holland in Guimaraes have been overshadowed by clashes with police in nearby Porto.

Eyewitnesses said some fans started hurling bottles, prompting Portuguese families watching the hosts’ match against Switzerland in a fan zone to flee with their crying children as chants of ‘England ’til I die’ filled the air.

An FA spokesperson said: “The FA strongly condemns the scenes witnessed in Porto overnight.

“Anyone responsible for these disturbances cannot be seen as true England supporters and are not welcome in football. They are an embarrassment to the team and the thousands of well-behaved fans who follow England in the right way.”

Twitter reaction

Adman: Don’t understand how Fabian Delph gets into the England squad, never mind the first team!

Jamie: Why is Fabian Delph playing?! He shouldn’t be in the squad let alone the starting line up. Watch him have a blinder now.

Ian: How does Fabian Delph get in the England team? He’s played 11 Premier League games this season for City. Probably most of them as sub.

Not a great deal of love for Delph this evening. Imagine my surprise.

Team News

18:50: Raheem Sterling is named England captain for the first time in the Nations League semi-final clash with Holland in Guimaraes.

The Manchester City forward was handed the armband for his 50th cap as regular skipper Harry Kane was named on the bench.

None of the seven Tottenham or Liverpool players featured in the starting line-up after being involved in the Champions League final just five days earlier.

Gareth Southgate made five changes to the Three Lions side that won 5-1 in Montenegro in March as John Stones, Ben Chilwell, Fabian Delph, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford came in.

While Southgate opted to rest his Champions League finalists, Holland boss Ronald Koeman named Liverpool duo Virgil Van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum in his XI.

Barcelona-bound Frenkie De Jong and sought-after Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt were also included a strong Dutch side.

Evening…

18:40: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of Holland vs England from Guimaraes.

We’ve reached the semi-final stage of the most prestigious and illustrious tournament created in the last 24 months – the Nations League.

Are we all excited? Me neither.

But should England win it… I’ll attend the parade, change my online profile picture to Gareth Southgate and herald it as the greatest English achievement in history.

The line-ups have just been announced – so let’s get going!

HOLLAND vs ENGLAND – TEAM NEWS

Captain Harry Kane is unlikely to start the match after playing a full 90 minutes in the Champions League in Madrid.

He was fresh coming back from injury, and Southgate isn’t likely to throw him straight back into the mix.

Spurs team-mates Dele Alli and Danny Rose could also be rested after their Champions League exploits.

Eric Dier only made a late appearance for Tottenham on Saturday night, so he could get the nod in the centre of the park, alongside Ross Barkley.

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold would likely play at right-back if he hadn’t of played the full Champions League final.

Kyle Walker should therefore step back into his preferred position, having featured as a third centre-back during the World Cup.

Harry Maguire and John Stones remain England’s best central defensive partnership, while Michael Keane is a decent back-up.

Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho are also likely to feature as England’s wide men, providing support for Marcus Rashford, in Kane’s absence.
