Sunday marks what would have been Lee Harvey Oswald‘s 81st birthday. Perhaps one of the most controversial figures in US history, Oswald was arrested with the murder of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. It came as JFK’s Presidential motorcade drove through Texas.

Oswald was working as an order filler at the Texas School Book Depository, a building which the motorcade passed.

Despite the evidence against him, Oswald consistently denied the allegations, insisting he was a “patsy” and had been framed.

A twist of events saw Oswald murdered just days later as he was escorted out of Dallas Police Headquarters.

Speculation, conspiracy and confusion has revolved around Oswald and the assassination ever since, with many maintaining that the case goes deeper, with Oswald having had ties with Soviet Russia.

During the 2013 documentary, ‘Killing Oswald’ old tape recordings of interviews from the time of Oswald’s death were played, with one purporting that Oswald had become a Communist aged 12.

The revelation came from George De Mohrenschildt – Oswald’s close friend – who, speaking in 1968, explained: “I remember the first conversation I had with Oswald right from the beginning.

“Lee was remembering his young days in New Orleans.

“When he was 12 or 13 years old, he realised the injustices of the US’ segregationist ways and began looking for alternative answers.

“‘Where?’ I asked him, ‘In Marx, Das Capital‘ he replied solemnly.

“Oswald said: ‘The exploitation of the poor by the rich for one thing – you can see it all across this country.

“‘The strong will always win.'”

De Mohrenschildt befriended Oswald in the summer of 1962.

Their friendship maintained until Oswald’s death.

His testimony in the following Warren Commission that investigated the assassination was one of the longest of any witness to the event.

Much controversy has surrounded De Mohrenschildt’s exact relationship to Oswald.

Many believe he was directly linked to the CIA, who Oswald might have been working with, perhaps unknowingly.

Dick Russel, author of the book ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’, during the documentary explained the often bizarre cross-overs that Oswald and the CIA had.

He suggested Oswald could have been involved in a covert operation, or in fact being used for something much bigger than himself.

He said: “Lee Harvey Oswald is one of history’s great enigmas, there are so many things about him that don’t add up.

“Here’s a guy who enlisted in the marines when he was younger after studying communist manuals before he enlists; he ends up at Japan at the Atsugi naval air base monitoring U-2 spy craft; supposedly defects to Russia with secrets about the U-2.

“But then there are questions: what was that really all about? Was Oswald dispatched on some sort of mission by the CIA or military intelligence to turn over certain secrets to the Russians and then maybe see where that went? He then marries a Russian woman and comes back to the US in 1962; he’s befriended by a man named George de Mohrenschildt who’s another mysterious and shady character who’s connected to the oil industry and the CIA and most likely debriefed Oswald for the CIA.

“Oswald goes to work after he’s been a defector to Russia to a company called Jaggars-Chiles-Stoval which is involved in some sort of mapping during the Cuban missile crisis.

“I mean, what’s going on with this guy?”

The Warren Commission, however, determined that Oswald had been a lone actor, and so the case was closed.
