Man Utd news: Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been a ‘huge surprise’ after £50m summer transfer | Football | Sport

Denis Irwin has been left astounded by the performances of Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Former United full-back Irwin was a part of an extremely successful United team in the 1990’s and early 2000’s.

Wan-Bissaka has shown early signs that he will become a mainstay at the club for years to come.

Following the £50million move from Crystal Palace to United, Irwin has had his mind changed on the youngster, noting his positioning in particular.

Making the comments to Sky Sports, he said: “His positional sense looks really good.

“That’s a huge surprise for someone that’s been a winger for years.

“He’s got a lot to learn obviously but he’s been a huge plus this year.

“We need to start keeping clean sheets again but I think we’ve started making steps in the right direction in helping in our defensive work, I really do.”

Despite the defensive acquisitions of Wan-Bissaka and former Leicester centre-half Harry Maguire, United have kept just one clean sheet in their first four Premier League games this season.

That came on the opening weekend in a 4-0 win over Frank Lampard’s Chelsea.

United have conceded in all three Premier League games since then, drawing two and losing one.

Furthermore, worrying news for United fans was confirmed yesterday, as Wan-Bissaka pulled out from the England squad with a back injury.

A Football Association statement read: “Aaron Wan-Bissaka has withdrawn from the England squad.

“The Manchester United right-back has returned to his club due to a back injury.

“With Trent Alexander Arnold and Kieran Trippier already included in Gareth Southgate’s now 24-man squad, no replacements are planned.”

United welcome Leicester City to Old Trafford next and United fans will be hoping that Wan-Bissaka’s injury does not rule him out.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be looking to return to winning form in this match, with the Red Devils winless in their last three matches. The game kicks off at 3pm on Saturday, September 14.
