WEST HAM 1-3 ARSENAL | OGBONNA (38), MARTINELLI (60), PEPE (65), AUBAMEYANG (69)

Arsenal hit three quick-fire goals to seal a 3-1 comeback victory at West Ham and end a nine-match winless run in the process.

The Gunners looked on course for yet another defeat as they fell behind to a fortunate Angelo Ogbonna goal at the London Stadium – but they rallied after the break to record a fairly comfortable victory.

It was the first win under the guidance of interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg, who was rewarded for starting Gabriel Martinelli and Nicolas Pepe as both got on the scoresheet before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added the third.

While Arsenal supporters booed their team off at the break, it was the West Ham fans who flooded out of the stadium early as Manuel Pellegrini continues to hang onto his own job – with Ljungberg showing his credentials for landing the Arsenal role on a full-time basis.

West Ham XI: Martin, Cresswell, Fredericks, Balbuena, Ogbonna, Rice, Noble, Fornals, Anderson, Snodgrass, Antonio

Arsenal XI: Leno, Maitland-Niles, Tierney, Sokratis, Chambers, Torreira, Xhaka, Ozil, Pepe, Martinelli, Aubameyang

  • Angelo Ogbonna opens the scoring with stooping header
  • Gabriel Martinelli equalises for Arsenal with cracking finish
  • Nicolas Pepe gives Arsenal the lead with emphatic curling finish
  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang adds a third in nine minutes

WEST HAM 1-3 ARSENAL

FT: Freddie Ljungberg has his first victory as Arsenal manager thanks to a nine-minute blitz against West Ham at the London Stadium. The Gunners showed absolutely nothing for 60 minutes but turned on the style to leave Manuel Pellegrini on the verge of being dismissed.

95: Close! Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is close to grabbing his second of the evening with a darting run. The outstretched leg of Ryan Fredericks stops Arsenal from grabbing a fourth.

93: Painful ending for these Hammers as Arsenal sweep the ball across the pitch leaving them to chase shadows. They still look shell-shocked about conceding three goals in nine minutes. It came from nowhere!

90: There will be seven minutes of added time. Manuel Pellegrini stands looking forlorn on the touchline – could be his final match in charge with West Ham hovering one point above the relegation zone.

87: Nicolas Pepe makes way for Reiss Nelson. Was that a £72million display? Probably not but nice to see him start to deliver for Arsenal. West Ham fans may not feel the same…

85: Haha! Stadium announcer introduces Matteo Guendouzi as David Luiz.

84: Granit Xhaka is down with what could be a head injury. Not quite sure what’s wrong with him but he’s forced off to a polite round of applause from the travelling fans. Matteo Guendouzi on for the final stages.

81: We’re in to the final ten minutes and plenty of empty seats can be seen around the stadium. Nicolas Pepe turns on the burners and leaves everyone but Angelo Ogbonna in his dust. The tricky winger looks to flick it past Ogbonna but fails and falls to his knees in frustration.

78: Nathan Holland on for Robert Snodgrass. This is his second Premier League appearance ever having got 19 minutes during the defeat to Wolves last week. Good luck, buddy.

75: Since his Premier League debut in February 2016, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored 43 goals in the competition, a joint-high along with Jamie Vardy.

73: There’s just stunned silence inside the London Stadium now. Nobody quite knows what has happened. Confidence is a remarkable thing. For 59 minutes it was just another dreadful Arsenal display. Misplaced passes. No quality. No character. Then they score three goals in nine minutes. Goals which never looked like coming. But now, a team of players bereft of confidence, are playing with a swagger again.

WEST HAM 1-3 ARSENAL | AUBAMEYANG

69: GOAL! What on earth is going on at the London Stadium?! West Ham have folded like a deck of cards as Arsenal grab a third in nine minutes!

Nicolas Pepe turns provider when crossing for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who spins and hooks the ball in to give the Gunners a two-goal lead.

WEST HAM 1-2 ARSENAL | PEPE

65: GOAL! All change please, all change! Arsenal have turned things around with their first two shots on target!

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang knocks the ball over to club-record signing Nicolas Pepe, who cuts inside before curling a beautiful effort beyond David Martin.

63: Wow, where have this Arsenal been? Finally Freddie Ljungberg’s side have woken up and they are going for it! Messy Ozil scoops the ball over to Gabriel Martinelli, but the Brazilian is blocked by a number of claret and blues shirts.

WEST HAM 1-1 ARSENAL | MARTINELLI

60: GOAL! Cometh the hour-mark, cometh Gabriel Martinelli to equalise for Arsenal!

Substitute Sead Kolasinac’s cross finds the Brazilian in the box and he tucks it home for his first Premier League goal. Dreadful defending from West Ham, who will be rueing those missed chances.

59: Arsenal are yet to register a shot on target.

58: So let’s just take a step back for a moment. Arsenal are in 11th position with four wins in 16 Premier League fixtures. That’s the same number of wins as Southampton.

57: Lazy, dangerous and very Granit Xhaka. He sloppily squares an unsighted pass across the pitch to absolutely no-one. Robert Snodgrass gratefully accepts and his effort is deflected wide for a corner. Arsenal survive again…

54: Honestly, the quality of this match has been so incredibly low. It would be easy to guess that neither of these sides had won in a while.

51: That’s very naughty from Aaron Cresswell. I gave him the benefit of the doubt when he slid in on Nicolas Pepe in the first half – but he’s just done it again and cynically caught the Arsenal winger. Mike Dean books him.

Cresswell has injured himself in the challenge and is replaced by Arthur Masuaku.

48: The Hammers win a corner straight after the restart but Mark Noble arrives to fire the clearance into orbit. There’s a slight concern for Arsenal with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang holding his head in pain. Mike Dean’s asking him if he needs treatment but the striker continues.

WEST HAM 1-0 ARSENAL

45: No side has lost more Premier League games on a Monday than West Ham (29), while only Man Utd (43) have won more Monday games in the competition than Arsenal (39). The Hammers have 45 minutes to change that stat! No changes for either side at the break.

Twitter reaction

Alex: It’s really becoming sad to watch Arsenal now. The length of this winless streak is becoming ridiculous now. Please shape up now it’s not funny anymore.

Adam: Freddie needs to go full Mike Bassett on them at half time. What a passive, uninspiring performance.

Prince: If you are an Arsenal fan and still have hope in this team to finish amongst the top 10 then good luck. I have lost count of how many times they’ve lost the ball in their own half with the major culprit being Ozil who doesn’t know how to track to retrieve possession.

Kieran: After sacking emery for poor results and a few games under Freddie, it’s pretty clear what the issue at Arsenal is. It’s the players. No passion, no respect for the shirt, no manager to blame poor performances on. Show some respect to the club!

WEST HAM 1-0 ARSENAL

HT: West Ham lead at the break courtesy of Angelo Ogbonna’s stooping header. Not a great spectacle for the neutral but Manuel Pellegrini won’t care – his side are moving away from the relegation zone.

47: West Ham continue to dominate in these final moments. I don’t want to compare everything to Duncan Ferguson – but Freddie Ljungberg is just sat there looking forlorn on the bench. Almost accepting this level of intensity.

44: I honestly don’t believe that West Ham have played THAT well. OK, they’ve moved it slightly better and more effectively – but their fight and desire is where the game is being won. Arsenal are being bullied.

42: VAR took about two minutes to check if the ball had been handled by Angelo Ogbonna. Looks to have struck the top of his left shoulder it’s incredibly difficult to tell. Anyway, the goal stands.

Chance! Suicidal stuff from Lucas Torreira, who gifts the ball to Michail Antonio deep in his own territory. Calum Chambers spares his blushes by making the block. Arsenal in tatters here.

WEST HAM 1-0 ARSENAL | OGBONNA

38: GOAL! Things go from bad to worse for Freddie Ljungberg and his Arsenal side…

The Gunners fail to deal with a routine corner and Pablo Fornals chips a superb ball into the box for Angelo Ogbonna. He meets it and the header deflects off Ainsley Maitland-Niles and into the net.

The replays don’t look good for Granit Xhaka, who quite clearly turned his back on the ball to avoid taking a knock…

37: “Not another one,” as Brenda from Bristol famously said three years ago. Another Arsenal player is down after Aaron Cresswell fairly but forcefully slid in on Nicolas Pepe. After a bit of treatment he’s up and about again.

35: Save! Michail Antonio embarks on one of his signature runs forward. He reaches the Arsenal penalty area before drawing a good stop from Bend Leno.

33: Freddie Ljungberg is in desperate need of a boost – and Mesut Ozil has squandered a very good chance to provide one. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang twist and turns over on the left channel before whipping a cross over to the unmarked German, who somehow heads straight over the crossbar.

30: Having not been included in the match day squad – Sead Kolasinac has just entered the fray.

28: Just the sniff of a chance as Kieran Tierney brings down Robert Snodgrass. The free-kick is sent to the far post where Pablo Fornals is waiting to shoot – but he’s barely connected and Bernd Leno gathers.

Injury! Honestly, when your luck is out… Freddie Ljungberg loses his second full-back on the night as Tierney goes down injured. Looks like the former Celtic star may have dislocated his shoulder after a collision with Michail Antonio. Nasty.

25: Booked! Robert Snodgrass loves a yellow card. He’s a fraction late on Gabriel Martinelli, who was simply too quick for him. Mike Dean had no hesitation.

Speaking of The Dean… I fully expect him to get involved should this match continue to disappoint. Y’know he won’t stand idly by let these sides ruin our Monday night…

22: Free-kick to West Ham over on the right touchline after a foul from Lucas Torreira. The Hammers play it quickly and Granit Xhaka uses his body fairly to prevent Felipe Anderson from collecting it.

19: Better. This is better. Nicolas Pepe strides down the left before laying it off for Ainsley Maitland-Niles to swing into the penalty area. Nobody in a yellow shirt can connect and Mesut Ozil decides to play it all the way back to Bernd Leno.

I can’t help but feel that Freddie Ljungberg’s comments about scoring the first goal has changed Arsenal’s approach.

16: Arsenal spend about 40 seconds passing it around the back before a mixture of Aaron Cresswell and Michail Antonio back them into a corner and Ainsley Maitland-Niles punts it clear. These highlights certainly aren’t going to last long.

13: One for the square-ball lover tonight. Arsenal and West Ham going sideways constantly. Like… like a crab…

10: West Ham have shaded these opening ten minutes. They are looking sharp on the transition and Arsenal seem petrified to go forward. Lots of possession-based football from the Gunners without any real penetration.

8: A thing has happened! West Ham break at speed but Michail Antonio fires the ball miles over the crossbar. The hosts then win a corner courtesy of Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney, who needlessly turns a Robert Snodgrass cross behind. Referee Mike Dean spots an infringement and Arsenal clear their lines.

5: Well absolutely nothing has happened. Good candidate for the most boring opening five minutes of the season. Both sides look scared to play forward. Kind of like that scene in The Simpsons when they pass the ball around the halfway line.

3: An intense London derby? Hardly. These two have started in a leisurely fashion – kicking the ball around the back to help them settle down and build some confidence. Arsenal in their away yellow colours, West Ham in traditional claret and blue.

WEST HAM 0-0 ARSENAL

1: And we’re underway folks! Massive night for these London sides. Could arguably either manger’s last fixture in charge. And who knows – could be both of their final games?!

Here they come!

So which statistics are relevant tonight? No side has beaten West Ham more in the Premier League than Arsenal BUT the Gunners are without a clean sheet in their last 11 matches in all competitions – and are winless in nine games in all competitions.

What d’ya reckon then? Draw?

Hector Beller-out…

Like that? No? Ok, I’ll keep the puns to a minimum.

Breaking news from the London Stadium is that Hector Bellerin is no longer involved tonight. He’s picked up an injury during the warm up and misses out. Ainsley Maitland-Niles now starts with Sead Kolasinac on the bench.

Consider yourselves informed.

Next goal wins…

It appears Arsenal interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg is very much enrolled in the school of ‘next goal wins.’ Man after my own heart…

The Swede, who has taken a single point from his opening two games as boss, wants to see his side start controlling matches as they strive for a first win in nine.

“If you score the first goal you don’t have to chase the game,” he said. “You don’t have to open up as much because you can control the game so that’s something that, in my opinion, we need to change a little bit.”

Andy: Manuel Pellegrini has built a team of one-footed flare players with no pace. Antonio looks unreal because he has pace and he stands out because nobody else does. Chelsea result doesn’t change how bad our season has been. We need change and fast.

John: Lose tonight, against a poor Arsenal team, and Manuel Pellegrini may face the sack, so, you’d have thought he’d go full guns blazing against their nervy defence, with 2 up front, but no chance, too stubborn! Desperately want us to win but lost faith with Pellegrini

Tim: This starting 11 has to be the bench mark now to build momentum and consistency Freddie has to be ruthless with players I don’t care if laca is on the bench it’s a team game he just needs to be prepared when called upon it’s that simple mate we was accommodating before.

Beware the wounded animal…

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini will not be taking Arsenal lightly despite their woeful form.

Arsenal would appear to be there for the taking as the Hammers go in search of only their second win in 10 in the league.

“I expect to see a team that will try to reverse their results,” Pellegrini said. “They have a lot of top players so we cannot be confident that, just because they are not in a good moment, we are going to win the game. We must try to win the game by having a good performance.

“Is it a good time to play them? The time for our team depends more on our performance than what is happening with the other team.”

What d’ya reckon West Ham fans? Is Pellegrini right to sound so cautious? Or would you prefer a bit more oomph from your manager?

Rafa Benitez to Arsenal?

Nope. The Spaniard, now managing Chinese Super League club Dalian Yifang, has been linked with the vacancies at Arsenal and Everton in recent weeks.

He’s the guest on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football and they wasted no time in putting the question to him.

“Obviously in the future I would like to come back to Premier League, but at the moment I must be very clear, there is no chance I will come back now,” Benitez said.

“I am happy, really pleased, they trust me, we have a lot of staff working on a big project. We want to leave a legacy, it’s a challenge for me, and I’m learning a lot, it’s a great experience, and I’m quite happy at the moment.”

Twitter reaction

Saqub: Today’s team looks far more balanced and playing to our strengths which is pleasing to see. Players like Gabriel Martinelli and Kieran Tierney will at least show desire and passion for the shirt. I think Arsenal will win today.

Vishnu: Coming from an Arsenal fan, finally Ljungberg has got it right and dropped David Luiz and is starting Nicolas Pepe! I can see them getting a result here.

KH: I swear Freddie Ljungberg watches AFTV (Arsenal Fan TV) because everyone asked for Alexandre Lacazette to be dropped so Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang can play in his preferred position.

Gabriel Martinelli…

Great news for my terrible Fantasy Football side! I brought him in when I played the wildcard and Sadio Mane’s absence means he’s drafted in tonight.

He’s scored three goals in four games in the Europa League and four in two in the Carabao Cup. So no, I’m not biased, but yes, I’d love him to bang…

Team news – Arsenal

Oh Mr Ljungberg – you’ve made Arsenal fans very pleased…

He’s made four changes from the Brighton defeat with 18-year-old Gabriel Martinelli replacing Alexandre Lacazette in the starting XI. Bold move.

Elsewhere Kieran Tierney, Calum Chambers and Nicolas Pepe are recalled with David Luiz dropping to the bench. Joe Willock and Sead Kolasinac aren’t even in the squad!

Team news – West Ham

Manuel Pellegrini’s made one change to the side who lost to Wolves last week. Quite a brave one too…

He’s dropped club record signing Sebastien Haller to the bench with fan favourite Michail Antonio starting instead. Just the one goal in 12 fixtures for the 25-year-old.

Can Ljungberg stop the rot?!

“This is not Arsenal, we have to give it a crack” – that was the message former Arsenal midfielder turned caretaker boss Freddie Ljungberg gave to his players at half-time on Thursday, with the side trailing by a goal at home to Brighton.

It seemed to work as Alexandre Lacazette levelled five minutes into the second half, only for Neal Maupay to secure a 2-1 win for the visitors.

Unai Emery’s exit has yet to bring about a change in fortunes in north London and winning at West Ham feels crucial heading into the festive period.

That new manager bounce…

Arsenal fans are feeling aggrieved that Freddie Ljungberg’s tenure skipped the honeymoon period and jumped straight to disaster avenue.

Ljungberg, a Gunners legend, has overseen an away draw with Norwich and a home defeat to Brighton to condemned Arsenal to their worst run of form in over 42 years.

I suppose it feels worse having seen former hard as nails striker turned ballboy-hugging Duncan Ferguson lead Everton to a 3-1 victory over Chelsea on Saturday.

Just feels like the club legend thing is working for everyone but Arsenal…

Evening…

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of West Ham vs Arsenal from the London Stadium.

Y’all ready for the Freddie Ljungberg derby?

For Arsenal, Ljungberg made 325 appearances in a glittering career spanning from 1998 to 2007 winning two Premier League titles and three FA Cup winners medals.

For West Ham, he scored against Birmingham and Sunderland and cost the club roughly £500k per game due to persistent injuries.

So quite clearly a legend for both sides…

Anyway, enough of that nonsense – we’ve got an intense London derby with a ridiculous amount at stake. Let’s get cracking!
